AI Re Writer Tools, and What Rewriting Changes
An AI re writer swaps words, not substance. Here's what a rewriting pass really changes, what Google's own policy says about it, and the cost math.

Search for an AI re writer and you get ten tools and zero explanations. I checked the top ten in July 2026 and every single result was a product page with a text box in it. Ahrefs, Summarizer.org, Originality.ai, HumanizeAI, QuillBot, Grammarly, RewriteAI, ChatGPT's tool page, AxiosHQ, Scribbr. Not one article about what the thing does.
That's a strange gap for a query pulling roughly 49,500 searches a month.
So, the short answer. An AI re writer changes the words and leaves the substance where it was. That's fine when you're adapting your own text for a different audience and it's a problem when you're using it to make copied or thin material look original, because search engines have an explicit written policy about exactly that manoeuvre. Below is what a rewriting pass mechanically does, what it doesn't do, what Google says about it in its own documentation, and what the whole loop costs.
What The Top Ten Looks Like, Precisely
I don't usually put a SERP breakdown in an article, but here it makes the point better than an argument would.

Ten out of ten. When I loaded the Ahrefs page it had a 2,048 character input limit, a tone selector, about 550 to 600 words of supporting copy split across use cases and a short technology explainer, and nothing at all about limits, accuracy, or what rewriting does to detector scores.
That's not a criticism of the page. It's a tool page and it's doing its job. But it means the entire first page of results for this query is people selling you a text box, and the questions you'd sensibly ask before using one have no answer anywhere in the results.
What A Rewrite Actually Changes
Mechanically, a rewriter takes your input and produces a version with different word choices and different sentence construction, holding the meaning approximately constant. That's the whole operation.
Which means it changes:
Vocabulary. Sentence boundaries. Clause order. Occasionally the register, if the tool has a tone setting.
And it does not change:
The argument. The structure of the argument. Which facts are present. Whether those facts are correct. Whether anyone needed to read this. The absence of anything specific, if there wasn't anything specific to start with.
That second list is the important one. If a paragraph was vague before the rewrite it will be differently vague afterwards. I've watched people run a thin article through a paraphraser three times looking for the version that finally works, which is a bit like reprinting a photograph at higher contrast hoping the person who wasn't in the frame will show up.
The Sentence Google Wrote About This
Here's the thing none of the ten ranking pages mention, and I find that omission fairly telling.
Google's spam policies page, which I loaded on 28 July 2026, defines scaled content abuse as "when many pages are generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users". The examples list includes this one, and I'm quoting it in full because the wording matters:
"Scraping feeds, search results, or other content to generate many pages (including through automated transformations like synonymizing, translating, or other obfuscation techniques), where little value is provided to users"
Synonymizing. Named specifically, as an obfuscation technique, in the spam policy. That is a description of what a paraphrasing tool does to text.
Now, the qualifier is doing real work in that sentence. The offence is scraping other people's content, transforming it, publishing many pages, and adding no value. Running your own paragraph through a rewriter to tighten it is not what's being described. But the distance between those two uses is narrower than the marketing suggests, and if your plan involves the word "unique" as a synonym for "not detectably copied", the policy is about you.
The helpful content guidance adds the general form, from the same day. "If you use automation, including AI-generation, to produce content for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings, that's a violation of our spam policies."
Rewriting To Beat A Detector
This is the actual reason most people search for these tools, so let's deal with it properly.
Detectors measure statistical properties of text, mainly how predictable each next word is and how much that predictability varies between sentences. Machine-generated prose tends to be smooth. Correct word choices, even rhythm, consistent sentence length. Human prose is lumpier.
A rewriter changes word choices but tends to preserve rhythm, which is why running a draft through one moves the number less than people expect. In my own drafting logs the pattern has been consistent enough that I stopped treating rewriting as the fix. A first draft would scan as machine-written. A rewriting pass would improve the score meaningfully but nowhere near enough, and the thing that actually got a piece over the line was writing differently from the first sentence rather than transforming it afterwards. Hard variation in sentence length, admitted uncertainty, specific numbers, the occasional fragment.
Which is an annoying answer because it's more work. It's also the answer that produces better writing as a side effect, so I've made peace with it.
There's a second problem with the detector-chasing loop, and it's the one I'd actually warn about. Rewriting for a score degrades the text. You lose the precise word because the tool preferred a less common one, you lose a sentence's emphasis because the clause order changed, and after three passes you have something that scans well and reads like it was translated twice. I've done this. The output was worse and the score was barely better.
What The Loop Costs
Numbers, since nobody puts them next to each other.
QuillBot's Premium page on 28 July 2026 showed $4.17 per month billed annually, with a free tier capping the paraphraser at 125 words per pass and the humaniser at 125 words with six uses a day. Grammarly's plans page the same day listed Free at $0 with 100 AI prompts a month and Pro at $12 a month with 2,000 prompts per member.
Originality.ai's Pro plan was $14.95 monthly for 2,000 credits, or $12.95 a month billed annually. One credit covers 100 words of AI detection, so a 2,000-word article is 20 credits.
Stack that into a realistic rewrite-and-check loop on one 2,000-word piece:

About forty-five cents in scans plus a subscription you already have. So the money isn't the constraint here. The constraint is that you're spending an hour degrading a piece of writing to move a number that doesn't correlate with anything a reader cares about.
If you're doing this at volume the credits do add up. Two thousand credits a month covers a hundred scans of 2,000 words each, and a three-pass loop means you're really getting about thirty-three articles out of the plan.
Translation Sits In The Same Sentence
Something I nearly missed in that spam policy quote, and it's worth its own paragraph.
The list of "automated transformations" names three things. Synonymizing, translating, and other obfuscation techniques. Translation is sitting right there next to paraphrasing, categorised identically.
That matters because translate-and-republish is a very common growth tactic and almost nobody thinks of it as risky. Take an article that ranks in English, push it through a model into six languages, publish six pages. It feels like expansion rather than duplication. Per the wording, if the source was scraped and no value was added, it's the same offence with a different mechanism.
The qualifier still applies and it's the whole game. Translating your own material, with a human checking that it reads naturally in the target language and adjusting the examples for that market, is a completely different act from bulk-piping someone else's article through an API. But if the workflow is "input, translate, publish, repeat", you're doing the thing the policy names, and the fact that it's a language change rather than a synonym swap doesn't move you outside the sentence.
I don't have a ranking-impact receipt for this and I'm not going to invent one. What I have is the policy text, which lists it explicitly, and the observation that the tactic is usually sold without anyone mentioning the policy exists.
Three Checks Before You Keep A Rewrite
Whenever I do run a paragraph through something, I check three things before accepting the output, and it takes about thirty seconds.
Did any specific detail disappear? Numbers, names, and precise verbs are the first casualties, because they're statistically unusual and rewriters drift toward the common word. If a figure vanished, reject the whole output.
Did the emphasis move? Rewriters reorder clauses freely and the end of a sentence is where the weight sits. A sentence that meant one thing can come back meaning something adjacent and blander.
Is it actually shorter, or just different? A lot of rewrites are lateral. Same length, same information, new words, no gain. That's the most common outcome and it's the one people mistake for progress because the text changed on screen.
When A Rewriter Is The Right Tool
I don't want this to read as blanket disapproval. There are jobs where it's exactly correct.
Adapting your own writing for a different audience is the clearest one. You wrote something technical, you need the version a non-specialist reads, the argument stays identical and only the register moves. That's a genuine translation problem and a rewriter handles it well.
Shortening is another. If you need 400 words and you have 700 of your own, a rewriting pass with a length constraint is faster than doing it by hand and usually as good.
Fixing a paragraph you can tell is clumsy but can't see how to fix. This works, with a caveat. Take the suggestion as a diagnosis rather than a replacement. It'll show you which clause was the problem, and then you rewrite it yourself, better than the tool did.
Non-native English writers cleaning up their own drafts. This is the use case I'd defend hardest and it barely gets mentioned in the marketing, which mostly aims at people trying to disguise something.
What I'd Do Instead
If the goal is text that doesn't read as machine-written, write it with variance from the start. That's covered properly in how AI fits into a writing process, and the short version is that texture is a drafting decision, not a post-processing step.
If the goal is a piece that ranks, rewriting is not the lever at all. What you're targeting matters more than how the sentences are shaped, and that's the SEO side of it.

One Last Thing About Substance
A rewriter can make any paragraph sound different. It cannot make a paragraph worth reading, and it definitely can't add the thing that was missing.
I keep coming back to that because the search volume for these tools is enormous and the volume for "how do I find something true to say" is basically nil. Which is not a moral point. It's just not where the useful work is.
