Every AI writing generator page hides the same question. How much can one actually produce in a single pass, what caps you first, and what a free tier is worth.

I checked the results page for AI writing generator in July 2026 and all ten organic results were free tool pages. Not roundups, not tutorials, not one person describing what happened when they used one. Ten text boxes.

So here's the thing none of those ten pages tell you. The generation ceiling on the underlying models is enormous, far past anything you'd write in one sitting, and the limit you actually hit is set by the product wrapped around the model rather than by the model. One of the tools on that page gives you 10,000 characters a month on its free plan, which is roughly a single article, and at published API prices that entire monthly allowance is worth somewhere between one and three cents of inference.

The gap between those two numbers is the whole business model, and understanding it changes what you should pay for.

Ten Results, One Product

The list is worth reading as a list. QuillBot, DeepAI, Grammarly, Ahrefs, Canva Magic Write, Rytr, TinyWow, aidocmaker, Wrizzle, and DeepAI again with a second URL. Positions one through ten, no gaps.

Every one of those is a page where you type a prompt and get text. The interfaces differ, the free allowances differ, and the model underneath is in most cases undisclosed. Type.ai, which ranks for adjacent phrases, is unusually straightforward about it and says paid users get "access to premium AI models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google". That's the honest description of most of this category, a wrapper with a nice front end.

I'm not being sniffy about wrappers. A good interface is worth money and I pay for several. It just means comparing generators on output quality is mostly comparing prompts, and prompts are free.

The Model Ceiling Nobody Mentions

Since the products won't say, I went to the model documentation, which does. Anthropic publishes maximum output tokens per model, and a rough conversion of one token to about 0.75 words in English. Both loaded 28 July 2026.

I had assumed, before I looked, that the ceiling was somewhere near the length of a long article and that "write me a 5,000 word guide" failed because it hit a wall. It doesn't. A single response can technically emit an entire manuscript.

That reframes the problem. If you ask a generator for 5,000 words and get 900, the constraint is the product's configuration, a prompt somewhere setting a target length, or the model's own tendency to wrap up. Not a hard limit. Which means arguing with the tool is sometimes worth it and sometimes the tool has decided for you and there's nothing to argue with.

Two Different Answers To What A Token Is

This one is a genuine trap and I only noticed because two pages from the same vendor disagreed.

The pricing FAQ says one token is "approximately 4 characters or 0.75 words in English". The model comparison table, describing the same generation of models, puts a 1M token context at about 555,000 words, which works out closer to 0.55 words per token. The reason is documented on the pricing page, newer models use a different tokenizer that "produces approximately 30% more tokens for the same text".

So every cost estimate built on the older ratio understates the newer models by roughly a third. On an email, who cares. On a manuscript that difference is 28,000 tokens, and if you're near a context limit it's the difference between a job that runs and one that doesn't.

I'd been using 0.75 for months without checking whether it still applied. That's the kind of quiet error that doesn't announce itself, it just makes your budget wrong in the same direction every time.

Where The Cap Actually Bites

Rytr publishes its plans on the homepage, which is more than most of this category does. Free is $0 a month and "Generate 10k characters per month". Unlimited is $7.50 a month. Premium is $24.16 with five tones of voice and a hundred plagiarism checks. Loaded 28 July 2026.

Ten thousand characters. English averages somewhere near six characters per word with spaces, so call it 1,600 words. Per month. One article, and not a long one.

Now price the same thing as raw inference. Ten thousand characters is about 2,500 tokens at four characters each. On Haiku 4.5 at $5 per million output tokens, that's a bit over a cent. On Sonnet 5 at its introductory $10 per million, two and a half cents.

The free tier is therefore about a penny of model time, dressed as a monthly allowance. I want to be fair about this, because the vendor is also paying for hosting, the interface, support, the plagiarism checker, and the people who built it, and none of that is free. But when you're deciding whether the free plan is enough to evaluate a product, it helps to know that the cap is a marketing decision rather than a cost constraint. That's a broader pattern I picked apart in what an AI writer free of charge actually costs, where the published caps turn out to be calibrated almost identically across unrelated vendors.

What Degrades Before The Limit Does

Here I have to switch from citation to opinion, and I'll flag it clearly because I have no measurement to offer.

In my own use, long single-pass generations fall apart well before any documented ceiling, and they fall apart in a consistent order. Structure goes first, and around the two-thousand word mark the headings start repeating ideas the piece already covered. Specificity goes second, so the later sections drift toward general statements that could sit in any article on the subject. Then, near the end, it starts summarising itself.

I have not run this as a controlled test. It's a pattern I notice, and I'd treat it as a working assumption rather than a fact. It does mean I generate in sections rather than in one shot, which costs a few more requests and produces something I don't have to rescue. The full ordering I use, including which stages are safe to hand over and which are not, is in using AI for writing and where it quietly fails.

The Input Is The Actual Variable

A generator with nothing in front of it will produce the average of everything it has seen on the topic. That's not a flaw. That's the correct behaviour given no information.

Which is why the difference between two people using the same generator is enormous and the difference between two generators used the same way is small. If you paste in a real brief, source material, the objection you're answering, and a sample of your own writing, almost any of the ten tools on that page will produce something usable. If you type a topic, all ten produce the same beige.

Nobody sells that, because you can't charge for it. It's an hour of your own preparation and it doesn't have a subscription button.

Which Of The Ten To Actually Use

Short version. If you already pay for a general chat interface, you already own a better generator than most of the tools on that page, and you can stop shopping.

If you don't, the free tiers are a reasonable place to try the category, with the caveat about what a free allowance is worth. Watch for the ones with a published cap, because a published cap is at least honest. Several of these pages publish nothing at all about their limits, and the absence of a number is not the absence of a limit.

A Note On Why This Page Exists At All

Worth saying out loud, since this article is itself trying to rank for the phrase.

My keyword data put "ai writing generator" at about 3,600 searches a month, difficulty 26, five dollars and change per click. Difficulty 26 reads as approachable. Then you look at the actual page and there are zero soft results in it. No forum thread, no personal blog, no Substack, nothing published by a person rather than a company. Ten vendors with real domain authority, each ranking their own free tool.

That's the opposite of the pattern I usually chase. When a top ten contains a Reddit thread or somebody's Medium post, there's an undefended slot and a small site can take it by being genuinely more useful. When it contains ten tool pages, the query has been answered the way the searcher wanted it answered, which is with a text box, and an article is competing against a product.

So I don't expect this piece to sit at number one, and I'm writing it anyway, because the thing it contains is not available on any of those ten pages and it's the sort of thing that gets cited elsewhere and found by people who already know what they want to know. Choosing which fights to take is most of the job, and I've been wrong about it often enough to have opinions. The measured version of that decision is in how I read a results page before writing.

The Part That Stays Yours

The generation is the cheap half. It has been for a while and the prices keep falling.

What none of these ten pages will do is decide what the piece should say, who it's for, or whether anyone will ever find it. That last one is the expensive problem, and it's why I'd spend money on research before spending it on a subscription. The pillar goes through the whole cost picture including the per-draft arithmetic across models.

Generate less, prepare more. That's the entire adjustment and it took me longer than it should have.
